Bushwalking

Wellington's abundance of National & State Parks provides the natural landscape for some fantastic bushwalking.

The Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park and the Alpine National Park offer wonderful opportunities to experience the outdoors. There are a number of walking tracks marked in these areas of varying grades of difficulty which will take you through some breathtaking natural scenery, flora and fauna.

In particular, the overnight walk to the isolated Lake Tali Karn hidden in a high country valley or the trek to the spectacular Moroka Gorge with its five waterfalls provides a unique Australian Alps walking experience.

The 655 km Australian Alps Walking Track also traverses the Alps from Walhalla to Canberra through the Wellington high country.

The Tarra-Bulga National Park located in the Strzlecki Ranges N/W of Yarram offers short and medium walks amongst towering mountain ash forest and lush green tree fern glades. Waterfalls and an abundance of wildlife is a highlight of walking this park.

There are many great areas in Wellington that can be easily accessed and provide excellent bushwalking experiences.

You can access the Alpine National Park via Licola or Dargo. Be sure to tell someone where you are heading and what time you expect to be back. For more information on these areas, call the Wellington Visitor Information Centre - Sale on 1800 677 520 or  www.parkweb.vic.gov.au.

Ben Cruachan Walking Club

Ben Cruachan Walking Club was established on 27 June 1965 with sixteen members and some guidance from the Melbourne Walking Club.

Unfortunately most founding members have gone to join the ultimate club, but some of their legacies still linger on, such as the Clive Lanigan walking track below Lake Tali Karng.  The club currently has about ninety members actively involved. They are fortunate to have some very talented folk who lead some very different walks and activities.

The club still has very active involvement along with Parks Vic with its most ambitious project, the McMillan Walking Track, spanning from the Great Alpine road at Cobungra across the mountains to Woods Point.  2009 marks the club’s Twenty First anniversary of the re-establishment of this historic 200km trail.  A club walks program is published every year with a comprehensive selection of walks, both mid-week and weekend, each month. Walk leaders provide a diverse range of interests, be it wildflowers or wildlife, and often in-depth knowledge on a number of subjects such as gold mining in the area.

Club activities take in extended walks in the mountains, which we are lucky enough to have on our doorstep, allowing a day walk to places such as Mt Howitt or to Walhalla and some of the eastern coastal national parks. The club also has extended trips to the Bogongs each year.
