Wellington's mountain country is steeped in history and provides some of Victoria's most spectacular scenery. Four Wheel Driving is a popular summer activity in the mountains forming the backdrop of Wellington.

With outstanding views, colourful wildflowers, historic towns, waterways and spectacular waterfalls, the Wellington region is one of the most significant high country destinations in Victoria.

The roads into Gippsland's high country from Wellington, via Licola or Dargo are remarkable for their scenic beauty but are mostly unsealed and narrow. The recommended main tour should take no more than five hours at the wheel, leaving plenty of time to stop and enjoy the sights. There are plenty of photo opportunities, historic sites and picnic spots, often with spectacular views.

The four wheel drive journey in to the isolated Wonnangatta Station site is considered a "must do" journey for enthusiasts.

Its adventurous image and reputation derives largely from a history of being a cattle station during the 19th century with inhabitants cut off during winter by snow and the mystery of a "murder at the station".

Only accessible by four wheel drive, the journey commences at Licola and is a distance of 111 kilometres to the Station Site...... the trip is best undertaken in dry conditions and provides excellent photo opportunities en route. Good camping facilities are provided at the Wonnangatta Station site.

Victoria's forgotten goldfields can be explored from Dargo, a remote High Country town. Remnants of the heady gold rush era can still be found at Grant, Bull Town and Talbotville near Dargo.

A trip by four wheel drive of approx 35 kilometres will take the traveller to Talbotville via Grant, a historic goldfield site where many shafts and diggings still remain. The return journey can be made via Crooked River with several river crossings to be made on route.
