Botanical Gardens
The Sale Botanic Gardens are located as part of the Lake Guthridge Parklands precinct, surrounding Lake Guthridge in the centre of Sale.
The Sale Botanic Gardens originated in 1860 when approx 20 hectares of land was set aside as a botanic garden. Twenty four years later, additional swampy land, now Lake Guthridge, was included in the site.
Over the ensuing years, the site has endured many incursions and changes, including use as a golf course and appropriation of various sections for sporting activities and the construction of a fauna park.
Today, the botanic gardens measure approx 5.1 hectares, with the adjoining Lake Guthridge and Lake Guyatt occupying an additional 27 hectares.
The Gardens owe their botanic heritage to Baron Ferdinand Von Mueller, the first state botanist, and Mr William Guilfoyle, the then director of the Royal Melbourne Botanic Gardens.
Before Eurpoean settlement, the gardens and lakes were part of the swampy floodplains of Flooding Creek and adjacent higher ground. The Gunai/Kurnai people inhabited the area for many thousands of years sustained by the many swamps, rivers and creeks surrounding Flooding Creek. River redgums today still bear the scars of bark removed to make canoes.
A major feature of the Botanic Gardens is the many remaining trees planted in the late 1800's by Von Mueller as well as remnant indigenous redgums some dating back 300 years. Near the gardens there are over 4km of trails to enjoy incorporating an indigenous art trail.
As well as an abundance of bird life visiting the parklands nearby, there is a comtemporary fauna enclosure containing Red-Necked Wallabies, Pademelons and Parma Wallabies set into a landscaped natural environment with excellent viewing opportunities. There is also a delightful "sensory garden" located within the botanic gardens for all to enjoy.
The Botanic Gardens are located in Guthridge Parade Sale, at the Eastern end of Lake Guthridge. Ample free parking on site.
