Beach & Inland Fishing

Escape to the coast where the sand is golden and the beach is endless, or visit one of Wellington's  lakes and enjoy all kinds of water sports.

Fish are plentiful throughout the Wellington region. Eels, Spiny Freshwater Crayfish, Blackfish are all very common as are Brown Trout.  Trout fishing is usually at its best in early spring and late autumn. Many slower streams are stocked with fish, but most are self-sustaining.

AVON RIVER - SPRINGBERGS LANE

The Avon River is accessible for fishing near its entrance in to Lake Wellington.  Turn off at Perry Bridge in to Springbergs Lane to the river, with long frontage ensuring good spots for all.  Small boat fishermen can launch directly into the Avon and also access the Perry River at its junction with the Avon downstream.  Bream and Flathead with good garfishing in season. 

LATROBE RIVER – ROSEDALE TO LAKE WELLINGTON

Due to the upstream power station, the water is slightly warmer than in nearby waters and subject to flood. Large, fast, deep and dirty with a mud bottom. Contains mainly carp up to 5kg and eels. Some black fish, redfin to 1kg and brown trout up to 1.4kg and also some good bream, estuary perch and yellow-eyed mullet at selected times.  The Latrobe River is easily accessible at Willow Park Rosedale and Longford, near its junction with the Thomson River. Downstream from the historic Swing Bridge at Sale, many excellent spots are available with easy vehicle access.

MACALISTER RIVER – LICOLA

The Macalister River is regularly stocked to ensure good fishing in season. It therefore offers some of Victoria’s best trout fishing. Easy access by vehicle to most of the river.  Above Licola the Wellington River is the headwater of the Macalister and has good native trout and many excellent fishing and camping spots.

MCLENNAN STRAITS – HOLLANDS LANDING/SECOMBE

Boat fishing for bream, perch, flathead and mullet in the protected McLennans Straits with ramps at Seacombe and Hollands Landing, offers anglers the opportunity to enjoy some of the best fishing in Gippsland. Good sealed carparks at both ramps.

PORT ALBERT

Located at the beginning of the 90 Mile Beach, Port Albert gives the angler the opportunity for offshore fishing, estuary fishing and angling from the jetties surrounding the Port facilities.  Flathead, Flounder and Garfish, as well as Shark, Mullet and Snapper are the specialities of this unique estuary.  Fishing charters are available to get you to the best spots, often located around the many islands comprising this fishery.

NINETY MILE BEACH

Surf fishing for bream, salmon, flathead, flounder, shark, snapper and tailor can be done along the 100kms of this beautiful beach.  The townships of Seaspray, Golden Beach, Loch Sport and Woodside provide all services and facilities for the surf angler. No licence is required and with over 90 miles of coastline, there are plenty of spots.  Free camping is available between Golden Beach and Seaspray in 18 designated campsites, some with toilets.  A marine National Park is located South of Seaspray.  The Australia Day weekend in January sees the annual Ninety Mile Beach surf fishing contest.

GIPPSLAND LAKES - LAKE WELLINGTON & LAKE VICTORIA

The Wellington area includes Lake Wellington, the largest lake in the Gippsland Lakes system, and a large part of Lake Victoria with its lakeside towns of Loch Sport and Hollands Landing. Boat fishing including trolling is popular, seeking bream, flathead and mullet.  Good launching ramps with jetties are located at Hollands Landing and Loch Sport and Wattle Point.  Accommodation is available at all locations or in nearby Sale or Stratford.

BRUNTON’S BRIDGE – THOMSON RIVER ABOVE COWWARR

Small but fast running creek containing eel and trout. Good for fly and spin
Location: Access from Cowwarr or Walhalla areas

RAINBOW CREEK – HEYFIELD

Contains carp, eels, rainbow trout and redfin. Location: Good access from Cowwarr township to Heyfield area

THOMSON RIVER – BELOW COWWARR WEIR

Contains blackfish, brown and rainbow trout, carp, conga eels, eels, and crayfish. Fishing around Heyfield and Sale.
